Losing your Oklahoma title is less of a problem than it used to be. Since July 1, 2025, Oklahoma issues most new titles electronically, so your title may not exist on paper at all. If it does exist on paper and it's gone, Oklahoma will replace it for $11 with one notarized form.
This guide covers how to tell which kind of title you have, how to replace a lost paper title, what to do about a loan, and how to sell once you're sorted.
Is your Oklahoma title paper or electronic?
Start here, because the answer decides your next step.
According to Service Oklahoma, titles issued on or after July 1, 2025 are electronic by default. Paper titles issued before then stay valid until the next title transaction. A few other things to know:
- If you have an active loan, the lienholder holds the title electronically. You won't have a paper copy either way.
- If you paid off a loan, the lender releases the lien electronically, and the title is issued in your name with no lien. Service Oklahoma doesn't notify you when that happens. Your lender is supposed to.
- If you're not sure, a Vehicle Information Request (Form 769) shows the title type on record. Service Oklahoma's electronic titles page also mentions checking through your OkCARS account.
If your title is electronic, you haven't lost anything. You can sell without a paper title (see the selling section below).
How do you replace a lost paper title in Oklahoma?
If your title was issued on paper and it's lost, stolen or destroyed, you apply for a replacement, which Oklahoma calls a duplicate title.
Step 1: Clear any old lien first
Liens stay active in Oklahoma's system until Service Oklahoma receives a properly executed release (Service Oklahoma: Vehicle Titles). If you paid off a loan years ago and the lien is still showing, get a signed lien release from the lender. You can then do one of two things:
- Mail the signed release to Service Oklahoma, Motor Vehicle Liens, P.O. Box 26800, Oklahoma City, OK 73126. There's no fee to release a lien in the system.
- Take the release to a licensed operator (tag agency) with your application.
If the loan is still open, contact your lender. They hold the title.
Step 2: Complete Form 701-7 and have it notarized
Download Form 701-7, Application for Replacement Certificate of Title. You'll need:
- The VIN, your tag number and your registration decal number and expiration
- The record owner's name, mailing address, phone and email
- Current Oklahoma registration. If you've moved out of state, you can show proof of out-of-state residency instead. If your Oklahoma registration has lapsed and you can't show you live elsewhere, you'll have to pay the back registration fees and penalties first.
- A notarized signature. The owner (or lienholder) signs in front of a notary. If someone signs for you under a power of attorney, include the notarized original or a certified copy of it.
The form also asks you to choose a title delivery format. Signing it confirms that the replacement cancels every earlier title for the vehicle, so if the old one turns up, don't use it.
Step 3: Submit it and pay the fee
| Licensed operator (tag agency) | By mail to Service Oklahoma | |
|---|---|---|
| Fee | $11 | $11 plus a $1.73 mail fee |
| Where | Any Oklahoma licensed operator | Service Oklahoma, P.O. Box 26940, Oklahoma City, OK 73126-0940 |
| Pickup | Titles are mailed, not handed over in person | Mailed |
Fees and addresses are from Form 701-7 (rev. 7/2025). The $11 replacement fee is set by 47 O.S. § 1108. Check the current form before you send it.
Service Oklahoma's own form says that mailing it directly won't get you a faster answer and recommends going through a licensed operator.
What if you never received a title at all?
If your title was issued but never showed up, there's no lien, and it's been 21 to 90 days since it was issued, contact Service Oklahoma. They'll mail you an affidavit to complete and return instead of making you buy a duplicate.
Do you ever need a paper title from an electronic one?
Usually not. Service Oklahoma prints a paper title only in specific situations: the vehicle is sold or registered out of state, sold at auction, leased, or used for floorplan lending. In those cases you file a Title Print Request (Form 701-5) at a licensed operator or through OkCARS. It takes about 7 to 10 days to arrive (Service Oklahoma: Electronic Titles).
How do you sell your car in Oklahoma once the title is sorted?
The paperwork depends on which kind of title you have. Either way, Oklahoma requires a notary.
With a paper title:
- Sign the title over to the buyer and have the assignment notarized.
- Give the buyer proof of the purchase price: a bill of sale, a purchase contract or Form 722-1, Declaration of Vehicle Purchase Price.
- For 2011 and newer vehicles, include an odometer disclosure. It's usually part of the title assignment. If not, use Form 729.
With an electronic title:
- Complete Form 718, Bill of Sale of an Electronic Title, and sign it in front of a notary. The form takes the place of the paper title, and it can only be used when the title on record is electronic.
- Include the same supporting documents: proof of purchase price, plus Form 729 for 2011 and newer vehicles.
Optional seller protection: Form 773, Notice of Transfer of Ownership records that you've assigned the vehicle. It costs $10 and can be filed online through OkCARS or at a tag agency. The form notes that Oklahoma law requires the buyer to transfer the title within 30 days.
Can you sell your car to Maverick Motors if the title is lost?
Yes. We buy cars in Oklahoma, and pickup is free. What you need depends on your situation:
- The car has a loan. You don't need the title. Give us your payoff details. Maverick verifies the payoff directly with your lender and handles the title release with them. We never ask you for a payoff letter (here's why).
- The car is paid off and the title is electronic. You may not need any paper at all. Tell our team you have an electronic Oklahoma title, and we'll tell you exactly what to sign.
- The car is paid off and the paper title is lost. File Form 701-7 first. While you wait, get your offer so you know your number. The offer is one firm figure, not a range, and it holds for 7 days.
Oklahoma title documents need a notarized signature, so plan on one notary visit. The rest happens online: you upload photos, verify your identity and sign. We arrange pickup, and you're paid by wire or certified check.
The bottom line
Before you file anything, find out whether your Oklahoma title is paper or electronic. If it's electronic, there's nothing to replace. If it's a lost paper title, the fix is Form 701-7, a notary and $11. Clear any old lien first, because that's where most applications get stuck. If you want a real number to start with, get your Maverick Motors offer in about 30 seconds.

- How do I know if my Oklahoma title is electronic?
